Ian Shepherson, Chief US Economist

Ian Shepherdson Chief U.S. Economist

Dr. Ian C. Shepherdson, a Briton who has been described by the London Times as one of the best economists in the City, offers a unique transatlantic perspective on the U.S. economy. His daily publication, Notes on the United States, is widely read by investors, policymakers and dealers in more than 25 countries.

Dr. Shepherdson was one of the first analysts to warn that a bursting housing bubble would drive the U.S. into recession, arguing as long ago as the fall of 2005 that the housing market would collapse, prompting a downturn deeper than in 2001.

Prior to joining High Frequency Economics in 1998, Dr. Shepherdson was Chief Economist, U.S.A., for HSBC Securities, Inc. in New York, where his views on the U.S. economy and markets guided the company's senior decision makers and clients around the world. He also spent six years with HSBC in London, latterly as Chief U.K. Economist.

Dr. Shepherdson is a past winner of the Wall Street Journal's annual economic forecasting competition, and he is widely quoted in the U.S. and international press. He is a frequent guest on National Public Radio and other media outlets. Dr. Shepherdson earned his Ph.D. in Economics from Loughborough University, England.

Dr. Shepherdson is a supporter of Build Africa, a charity which works closely with disadvantaged rural communities in Uganda and Kenya, building and supporting primary schools.  Children in schools funded by Build Africa see their test results and life chances improve dramatically.  You can learn about Build Africa at www.build-africa.org.
